An Instagram influencer is facing severe legal and financial repercussions after documenting herself smoking inside an airplane lavatory mid-flight, leading to an official ban and a lawsuit from the airline.
Vera Dijkmans, a social media content creator known for her large online following, reportedly triggered the incident during a flight bound for Mumbai, India. According to posts shared on her own social media accounts, Dijkmans entered the aircraft lavatory to smoke a cigarette during the flight, even publishing a mirror selfie featuring a lit cigarette.
Upon arrival at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai, local law enforcement authorities detained Dijkmans for questioning. While the influencer initially downplayed the encounter on social media after being released, the long-term consequences of the incident quickly escalated.
Airline Repercussions and Financial Liability
Turkish Airlines has responded to the incident with strict enforcement measures:
Lifetime Ban: The carrier has officially blacklisted Dijkmans, canceling her remaining itineraries and issuing a permanent ban from all future flights.
Legal Action: The airline is pursuing civil litigation to recover financial damages resulting from the disruption.
Maintenance Costs: Because the aircraft required specialized maintenance, including grounding the plane to deep-clean the entire ventilation system, the airline is demanding full restitution from the influencer to cover the operational losses.
The incident has sparked widespread criticism online, highlighting the severe legal penalties, safety risks, and substantial financial liabilities associated with violating international aviation laws regarding smoking on commercial aircraft.
