The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the tragic death of 17 police officers following a coordinated terrorist attack on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State, in the early hours of May 8, 2026.
According to an official statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Anthony Okon Placid, the assault began at approximately 1:15 a.m., with insurgents launching a multi-directional offensive against the facility. The slain police personnel were at the institution undergoing advanced, specialized operational and counter-terrorism training.
The statement also confirmed that several Nigerian Army personnel made the ultimate sacrifice while successfully repelling the attackers.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, paid tribute to the fallen officers, describing them as courageous and dedicated personnel who demonstrated exceptional patriotism and an unwavering commitment to national security. The IGP extended his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased, assuring them that the nation would forever honor their sacrifice.
In a demonstration of institutional solidarity, the Commissioner of Police for the Yobe State Command, CP Usman Kanfani Jibrin, visited the training school on behalf of the IGP. During the visit, CP Jibrin commiserated with the Commandant of the school, Brigadier General A.C. Enuagu, military officials, and the surviving police trainees.
CP Jibrin commended the resilience of the surviving personnel and urged them to remain resolute in completing their specialized training as a tribute to their departed colleagues.
The Inspector-General of Police re-assured the public that the Nigeria Police Force, in close collaboration with the Armed Forces of Nigeria and partner security agencies, remains committed to sustaining ongoing counter-insurgency operations and ensuring the perpetrators of the attack are brought to justice.
