BANGKOK:  Authorities have apprehended a 46-year-old Nigerian national, identified as Nwaiwu Ifeanyi Placid, in connection with a major cocaine trafficking network operating within Bangkok’s prominent nightlife districts.

The arrest, confirmed by Metropolitan Police Bureau Chief Pol Lt Gen Sayam Boonsom, is part of a broader tactical operation targeting a long-standing narcotics syndicate. Placid was intercepted near Silom Soi 1, where officers seized approximately 27 grams of cocaine.

Coordinated Arrests and Asset Seizures

The operation led to the detention of three additional suspects on drug possession charges:

  • Thomas Giubibini, a Swiss national.

  • Thanayot Asawamethi, 35, a Thai national.

  • Nattawat Wangkitjinda, 34, a Thai national.

In addition to the narcotics, police confiscated a vehicle and significant assets, including 1.5 million baht in cash, various foreign currencies, and jewelry valued at approximately 400,000 baht.

A Multi-Phase Investigation

Investigators linked this recent bust to a series of coordinated raids dating back to late last year. Previous milestones in the investigation include:

  • October 26, 2023: Undercover officers, posing as construction workers, dismantled a Nana-based cell, resulting in the arrest of nine Nigerian nationals.

  • January 23, 2024: A follow-up raid led to further arrests and the seizure of assets exceeding 7 million baht.

Targeted Intelligence

Central to the syndicate’s operations is a 47 year old Nigerian national known as "Patrick." Authorities allege that Patrick has resided in Thailand for 17 years and pioneered a "middleman-free" distribution model.

Pol Maj Gen Theeradet Thamsuthee, Deputy Commissioner, noted that the breakthrough was achieved through sophisticated surveillance.

"Officers infiltrated the syndicate's encrypted communication channels and tracked their movements to facilitate the arrests," he stated.

While the primary suspect reportedly resisted arrest before being restrained, police officials confirmed he has since confessed to the charges. All suspects remain in custody as the Metropolitan Police Bureau continues its investigation to fully dismantle the network’s remaining infrastructure.
