The Nigerian Army has launched an investigation into the death of Abdulsamad Jamiu, a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), who was killed during a military operation in Shagari Estate, Dei-Dei, in the early hours of Saturday.

While the Guards Brigade maintains that the corps member was caught in a crossfire with armed bandits, representatives of the deceased’s family have publicly disputed this claim, alleging a "cover-up" and calling for an independent inquiry.

The Military’s Account

According to an official statement from the Guards Brigade Headquarters, troops from the Quick Response Unit were dispatched to Shagari Estate following distress calls regarding an ongoing armed robbery.

Olawuyi Odunola, the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, stated that the situation was "fluid and highly volatile." The Army’s report details the following:

  • Engagement: Upon arrival, troops reportedly came under fire from fleeing suspects, leading to an intense exchange of gunfire.

  • Casualty: Mr. Jamiu was caught in the crossfire during the engagement and succumbed to his injuries despite efforts to secure the area.

  • Procedural Follow-up: The Army has handed over the remains to civil authorities at the Kubwa General Hospital and has initiated a full internal investigation to review operational procedures.

Conflicting Reports and Family Allegations

The military's version of events has been met with sharp criticism from those close to the victim. A family source, speaking via the social media platform X, characterized the military’s explanation as a fabrication.

"The army is not telling the truth. Jamiu was not caught in any crossfire with robbers. The soldiers came shooting and killed him," the source claimed, alleging that troops opened fire indiscriminately without evidence of a secondary party of armed robbers.

Residents of Shagari Estate reportedly remain in shock, with many joining the family’s call for a transparent, third-party investigation to ensure accountability.

Current Status

The Guards Brigade has extended its condolences to the Jamiu family and the NYSC management, reiterating its commitment to protecting lives and property within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

As of press time, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has yet to release an official statement regarding the loss of the corps member. The results of the Army’s internal probe are expected to be briefed to the public upon completion.
