Anambra Cleric Arrested for Alleged Sexual Assault and Forced Abortion of Teenager
ONITSHA, NIGERIA — Law enforcement officials in Anambra State have apprehended a local cleric following allegations of the serial sexual assault and impregnated of a 16-year-old girl.
The suspect, identified as Favour Ezani, is the General Overseer of a Pentecostal church in Amichi, Nnewi South Local Government Area. He was taken into custody by the Special Anti-Touting Squad (SASA), a state government security initiative, following a report from a neighboring community operative.
Details of the Allegation
According to SASA spokesperson Karen James, the victim, Precious Okafor, had been placed in the cleric’s care by her aunt for a "special deliverance session." The abuse reportedly began in November 2025.
The matter came to light after the victim’s aunt grew suspicious of the teenager’s physical condition. Upon questioning, the girl identified Ezani as the perpetrator. The victim further alleged that the cleric:
-
Subjected her to repeated sexual assaults under the guise of spiritual exercises.
-
Used threats to ensure her silence.
-
Administered a concoction of bitter leaf and unknown herbal substances in a failed attempt to terminate the resulting pregnancy.
Suspect’s Admission
In a video circulating on social media, the suspect reportedly admitted to the acts. He confessed to administering herbal mixtures to end the pregnancy to avoid "public exposure" and has since appealed for leniency, offering to settle the victim's medical bills.
Current Status and Call for Support
The victim is currently suffering from medical complications believed to be the result of the forced herbal ingestion. She has made a public appeal to the Anambra State Government, NGOs, and private individuals for assistance in accessing urgent and professional medical care.
The suspect has been transferred to police custody for further investigation and formal prosecution.
