Alhaji Mohammed Bamanga Tukur, former civilian governor of the defunct Gongola State and one-time National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, has died in Abuja at the age of 94 following a protracted illness.

A seasoned technocrat and industrialist, Tukur served as Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority and later led the African Business Roundtable prior to his illness in 2023. His political tenure as governor lasted from August to November 1983 before a military takeover interrupted the administration.

Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri paid tribute to the late elder statesman, acknowledging his extensive contributions to Nigeria's political, socio-economic, and industrial growth. In response to the loss, Governor Fintiri declared a three-day state mourning period, drawing numerous sympathizers to Tukur's residence in the Old GRA, Jimeta, to offer condolences to the family.
