The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Friday, June 12, as a public holiday to commemorate Democracy Day.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the government. In an official statement signed by the Ministry's Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the government emphasized that June 12 stands as a pivotal milestone in the nation's history, honoring the courage, resilience, and sacrifices of the Nigerian people who fought to establish democratic rule. The statement further noted that the legacy of these national heroes continues to shape the fundamental values and responsibilities of the state.
Additionally, the Minister reaffirmed the administration's ongoing commitment to upholding democratic ideals, specifically emphasizing the preservation of the rule of law, transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance across the nation.
