Security operatives in Imo State have successfully located the suspected camp where 19 prospective National Youth Service Corps members are being held. The victims were abducted along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in the Umunoha area while traveling in two buses from Ibadan, Oyo State, to orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states.

Operation Details and Security Challenges

The breakthrough came after security forces utilized surveillance drones to track the abductors deep into the bush. However, the Imo State Police Command explained that tactical entry has been temporarily delayed. Intelligence reports indicate that the forested camp has been heavily mined with improvised explosive devices.

To ensure the safety of the hostages and security personnel, the command is mobilizing heavy tactical equipment. Plans are underway to deploy bulldozers and armoured personnel carriers to safely breach the perimeter and neutralize potential hazards.

Background on the Incident

The incident occurred when armed gunmen intercepted the transport buses, forcing the passengers into the bush. The drivers managed to escape and immediately alerted authorities at a nearby checkpoint, triggering a massive search-and-rescue operation.

While 10 individuals have been successfully rescued by the police, confirmation is still pending on whether they are part of the abducted group of prospective corps members. Meanwhile, the transport company confirmed that 19 passengers remain in captivity.

Ransom Demands and Family Impact

The abductors have established contact with some of the victims' families using the captives' mobile phones, demanding a ransom of N50m per person, totaling N950m for all remaining hostages. Despite the tense situation, authorities maintain that rescue operations are progressing as security forces finalize their strategy to safely liberate the remaining victims.
