Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has evaluated the economic trajectory under President Bola Tinubu's administration, noting improvements in macroeconomic stability while emphasizing that ordinary citizens are yet to experience tangible relief.
During an interview on News Central Television, Ezekwesili commended the government for adhering to market principles in managing foreign exchange policy, which has successfully reduced volatility. However, she cautioned that this stability has not translated into improved living conditions, pointing out that widespread poverty and a high cost of living persist.
Addressing inflation, the former minister argued that the recent sharp price increases were largely avoidable and stemmed from specific policy choices. She criticized the government's approach to inflation metrics, asserting that statistical adjustments do not reflect the heavy financial burden currently borne by households.
Furthermore, Ezekwesili emphasized that macroeconomic indicators must be evaluated alongside structural barriers. She identified low productivity as a primary constraint hindering economic growth, job creation, and the enhancement of household incomes, attributing the nation's ongoing challenges to policy misalignments that fail to address fundamental economic bottlenecks.
