Medical professionals have clarified statements made by the daughters of veteran Yoruba actor Taiwo Hassan, widely known as Ogogo, regarding his ongoing battle with stage-four cancer.
The clarification follows viral social media videos posted by the actor’s daughters, Lima and Kira Taiwo, in which they appealed for medical assistance and claimed that hospitals had refused to continue treatment for their father.
Addressing the development on social media, Dr. Olusina Ajidahun, known as The Bearded Dr. Sina, emphasized that the daughters' characterization of the situation could be misunderstood. He explained that patients diagnosed with stage-four cancer are frequently transitioned to palliative care once chemotherapy and other active therapeutic options have been fully explored. Palliative care focuses on managing terminal symptoms and enhancing quality of life rather than curative treatment.
The doctor cautioned that describing standard medical procedures as a refusal to treat could foster a negative perception of healthcare workers and potentially provoke hostility toward medical professionals. Furthermore, he strongly warned the public against attempting to treat advanced cancer with unverified herbal remedies or concoctions, noting that such substances could accelerate organ damage, cause severe complications, and lead to wasted resources.
In their respective video appeals, Ogogo’s daughters described discovering the severity of the actor's condition just weeks prior and expressed their distress over his deteriorating health. Both daughters emphasized that their appeals were strictly for medical intervention or connections to specialized healthcare providers capable of assisting their father, rather than financial contributions.
Taiwo Hassan, 66, is a prominent figure in the Nigerian film industry with a career spanning over forty years, during which he has starred in more than 300 films and established himself as a recognized icon of Yoruba cinema.
