Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila
The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill has extended the deadline for memoranda and position papers to Friday, August 21, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. West Africa Time.
Announced by Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to the President and Chairman of the Working Group, the extension aims to give individuals, institutions, and organizations sufficient time to submit substantial contributions. The initiative seeks to ensure the proposed legislation benefits from comprehensive public consultation and diverse stakeholder perspectives.
Objectives of the Proposed Legislation
The upcoming bill establishes operational, administrative, institutional, and funding frameworks for an advanced policing architecture. Designed to address Nigeria's security challenges, the legislation incorporates safeguards for accountability, professional standards, and the protection of citizen rights.
The drafting process requires addressing several critical factors:
-
Sustainable funding models
-
Command and control structures
-
Recruitment and training standards
-
Operational jurisdictions and inter-agency coordination
-
Accountability mechanisms and safeguards against political interference
Submission Guidelines
Legal practitioners, civil society organizations, security professionals, state governments, academic experts, and members of the public are invited to participate. All position papers must be submitted exclusively through the official portal at nationalpolicingbill.com prior to the new deadline.
Following the conclusion of the consultation period, the Working Group will finalize the implementation-ready draft. The completed Executive Bill package will be presented to President Bola Tinubu for review on September 3, 2026, ahead of formal legislative processing.
