The Department of State Services (DSS) has issued an urgent security alert regarding credible intelligence that armed bandits are planning to intensify the kidnapping of farmers in several rural communities across Kwara State.

According to an intelligence report obtained by SaharaReporters, the planned offensive is reportedly orchestrated by notorious bandit leaders identified as Auta-Ilorin and Siddi Dan-Kano. The primary targets include farm settlements on the outskirts of the Lema, Ndeji, and Gbugbu communities within the Edu Local Government Area (LGA).

Retaliatory Motives

In a formal statement dated April 16, 2026, the State Director of Security, J.S. Adams, directed the warning to the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, calling for immediate intervention. The DSS indicated that these planned attacks are likely retaliatory measures in response to ongoing military operations that have successfully disrupted criminal networks and bandit activities in the region.

The DSS statement noted:

"Intelligence indicates plans by bandits... to intensify kidnapping of farmers... This development would cause the farmers to abdicate activities in the communities. The planned disruption of farming activities is retaliation to the ongoing military operations frustrating banditry and other criminal vices."

Growing Security Concerns

The security agency warned that such attacks could force a mass exodus of farmers, leading to a total collapse of agricultural productivity in the affected areas. To mitigate this threat, Director Adams suggested that "security operations be extended to vulnerable communities to forestall any untoward development and enhance public safety."

Regional Context

The alert comes amidst a sharp escalation of violence in Kwara State throughout 2026. While the capital city of Ilorin has remained relatively stable, the northern senatorial districts—specifically Kaiama and Baruten—have faced a surge in communal violence and banditry.

State authorities and local law enforcement are now under pressure to bolster rural patrols and protect the state’s agricultural backbone from further destabilization.
