Man Arrested After Seven Injured in Derby City Centre Vehicle Collision

DERBY, UK — Authorities have arrested a 36-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder following an incident in which a vehicle struck several pedestrians in Derby’s city centre on Saturday evening.

The collision occurred on Friar Gate, a prominent nightlife district. Despite the nature of the event, Derbyshire Constabulary clarified that the incident is not currently being treated as an act of terrorism.

Key Details of the Incident

  • Casualties: Seven individuals were injured and transported to local hospitals. Police have confirmed that none of the injuries are considered life-threatening.

  • The Suspect: The individual in custody is a 36-year-old male resident of the UK, originally from India. He remains in police custody for questioning.

  • Police Response: Chief Superintendent Emma Aldred reported that officers were on the scene within seconds. The suspect was apprehended just seven minutes after the initial collision.

Current Status

While Friar Gate is typically a high-traffic area for weekend leisure, the street remained uncharacteristically quiet today as investigations continued. Police presence was maintained throughout the morning to reassure the public and secure the scene.

This does not mean the incident is currently being treated as terrorism," Chief Superintendent Aldred told reporters, emphasizing that the investigation is ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the event.
