The African Democratic Congress presidential candidate has sharply criticized the federal government's recently announced thirty-day petrol discount, describing it as a short-term measure that fails to address the deep-rooted economic challenges facing citizens.

Speaking during the inauguration of the party's presidential campaign council, the former Vice President argued that a temporary price reduction is insufficient to offset years of soaring inflation affecting food prices, transportation, electricity, and general business operations. He contended that the policy amounts to an election-season palliative rather than sustainable relief, asserting that the administration's economic record would be a central issue in the upcoming general election.

Policy Debates and Alternative Proposals

The candidate pointed out that the government had previously rejected proposals for targeted support on fuel costs, only to adopt a similar mechanism later. He argued that the current administration's approach lacked necessary safeguards and transparency.

Outlining an alternative framework, he advocated for supporting petroleum products refined domestically and sold locally. Key components of this proposed model include:

  • Placing strict caps on government support mechanisms

  • Incorporating all relief measures directly into the national budget

  • Ensuring independent audits of the entire process

  • Excluding imported petroleum products from support initiatives to encourage local production

Broader Economic and Electoral Priorities

Beyond energy costs, the opposition figure emphasized the need for comprehensive measures to tackle broader economic issues, including lowering food prices, stabilizing electricity supply, creating employment, and improving security for agricultural regions and transport routes. He urged campaign council members to actively engage citizens across markets, motor parks, educational institutions, and rural communities to explain these policy alternatives.

Furthermore, the speech addressed the integrity of the electoral process, calling for significant reforms ahead of the vote. Recommended changes included:

  • Immediate public access to polling-unit results

  • Live broadcasts of proceedings from state and national collation centers

  • Independent pre-election and post-election audits of voting technology

  • Establishment of an independent commission to investigate and prosecute electoral offenses

  • Stronger penalties for vote suppression and result tampering

The candidate also raised concerns regarding political freedoms, condemning alleged restrictions on opposition campaigns in certain regions and vowing that the party would campaign nationwide while upholding citizens' constitutional rights to free movement and expression. Concluding the address, he called on the leadership to take responsibility for ongoing economic difficulties and urged voters to mobilize for change in the electoral cycle.
