Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, representing Abia South Senatorial District, has officially resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to join the Labour Party (LP).

In a message shared with associates on Monday, the veteran lawmaker cited the ongoing legal instability within the ADC as the primary catalyst for his departure. The move comes as the party grapples with a series of conflicting court judgments and internal leadership disputes.

A Strategic Shift

Abaribe emphasized that his decision was strictly strategic and not a reflection of his personal rapport with the ADC’s rank and file.

"Given the uncertainties concerning the ADC party with regard to multiple lawsuits and court judgements, I have today resigned from the ADC and joined the Labour Party effective immediately," Abaribe stated. "This has nothing to do with the leadership and members whom I have enjoyed and will continue to enjoy close and solid relationships with. It is a tough call, but leadership means making tough calls in uncertain times."

The Senator’s media aide, Uche Awom, confirmed the defection, stating, "Yes, it is true; Senator Abaribe has moved to the Labour Party."

Political Background

The 71 year-old lawmaker has seen a series of political transitions in recent months. Abaribe was among nine senators who defected to the ADC on the floor of the Senate on March 12. Though he was re-elected to the Red Chamber in 2023 on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), his latest move marks his second party change within a single legislative session.

Key Highlights of Senator Abaribe’s Career

Veteran Lawmaker: First elected to the Senate in 2007; currently seeking a fifth term.

Executive Experience: Previously served as the Deputy Governor of Abia State.

Legislative Influence: Known as a vocal figure in the Senate, having served as Minority Leader in previous sessions.

Abaribe concluded his announcement by expressing gratitude to his supporters, reaffirming his commitment to "making Nigeria a better place" despite the shifting political landscape.
