The All Progressives Congress (APC) is navigating a period of internal tension as it works to finalize its screening report for the upcoming 2027 general elections. While the party had initially scheduled the release of its list of cleared aspirants for May 13, the process has been delayed due to a high volume of petitions submitted to the eight panels tasked with vetting candidates.

Party sources indicate that the screening process involved approximately 2,980 aspirants across various levels, including the presidency, governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and state assemblies. Addressing the delay, a senior party official emphasized that the integrity of the process is the priority, stating, "We are still working on the screening report to make sure everything goes well."

Governors Maintain Standing

Despite speculation regarding the status of various high-profile figures, party leadership confirmed that no incumbent governors have been disqualified. Officials noted that the party remains committed to supporting its governors, with some, such as Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, receiving automatic clearance.

Debate Over Consensus vs. Primaries

The APC hierarchy has expressed a preference for a consensus-based approach to candidate selection to ensure party unity and avoid costly litigation. However, this strategy has met with resistance in several states, leading to public disagreements and legal posturing.

Ogun State: A public dispute has emerged between the state government and Senator Gbenga Daniel. The government criticized Senator Daniel for opposing the current party structure, alleging he is undermining the same consensus process that facilitated his 2023 victory. Conversely, representatives for Senator Daniel maintain that he secured his senatorial seat through a competitive, delegate-based primary election rather than a consensus arrangement.

Oyo State: A group of governorship aspirants, including former Deputy Governor Rauf Olaniyan and Mr. Akeem Agbaje, issued a communiqué opposing potential candidate imposition. While not strictly against consensus, the group demanded a transparent and democratic process, warning against the use of financial inducements to hijack the will of the party members.

Shifts in Strategy: The Ondo Example

In a notable shift, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has bowed to pressure regarding the selection process. Following a directive from the APC National Working Committee (NWC), Governor Aiyedatiwa announced that the state chapter would adopt direct primaries scheduled for May 15, 18, and 20, 2026, where a consensus cannot be reached.

Enhanced Security Measures

In response to the heightened political activity, the Ondo State Police Command has launched a "show-of-force" operation. Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal led a high-powered team through Idanre and Owo local government areas to deter political violence and reassure residents.

Police spokesperson DSP Jimoh Abayomi stated that the command is committed to maintaining law and order, warning that any acts of thuggery, voter intimidation, or disturbances will not be tolerated as the party moves forward with its electoral preparations.
