Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has issued a sharp critique of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, asserting that political defiance and the intimidation of the opposition cannot overshadow the deteriorating security and economic conditions facing Nigerians.

In a statement released Wednesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, the Waziri Adamawa responded to recent remarks by President Tinubu, who suggested that the prevailing insecurity would not pressure him out of office. Atiku, a leading presidential aspirant on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), described the President’s posture as "troubling" and disconnected from the hardships experienced by the citizenry.

Security Concerns and Human Toll

Atiku emphasized that the administration’s success will be judged not by political resolve, but by its ability to protect lives. He highlighted the following points regarding the state of national security:

  • Casualty Figures: Since May 2023, over 10,000 Nigerians have reportedly been killed in violent attacks, with some estimates suggesting the toll could exceed 18,000 lives lost within two years.

  • Government Inaction: Atiku cited the recent attack in Ilejemeje, Ekiti State—where a pastor was killed and worshippers abducted—as evidence of a lack of federal empathy and a failure to provide adequate protection.

  • Trivialization of Grief: He condemned the characterization of security concerns as political "deflection," arguing that reducing the deaths of innocent citizens to political rhetoric is offensive to bereaved families.

"Leadership is not sustained by defiance, but by responsibility, compassion, and measurable action in the face of national crisis." — Atiku Abubakar

Economic and Political Implications

Beyond security, the former Vice President pointed to broader governance failures that he believes have eroded public confidence. He noted that while President Tinubu has a constitutional right to seek re-election, the "verdict of the people" will ultimately depend on the administration's performance.

Key areas of concern cited include:

  • The escalating cost of living.

  • "Reckless" fiscal policies.

  • A steady decline in public trust.

A Call for Strategic Recalibration

Atiku concluded by urging the Presidency to move past "bravado" and focus on the primary duty of the state: the protection of lives and property. He called for an urgent recalibration of the national security strategy, warning that no administration can maintain its mandate indefinitely while the sanctity of human life remains unshielded.

The ADC chieftain maintained that the opposition is not seeking to force the President from office, but rather that the administration’s own record is putting governance "on trial.
