The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has expressed concern over the attack on party supporters in Enugu State, warning that political violence and lawlessness could have devastating consequences for everyone.
Obi made his position known in a video shared on X, where he condemned the reported attack and urged those responsible to desist from acts capable of threatening peace and security.
The former Anambra State governor also disclosed that some of his scheduled engagements across different states had been cancelled after the individuals who invited him reportedly received threats.
The incident occurred on Saturday at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, where suspected political thugs allegedly attacked NDC supporters who had gathered to welcome the party’s governorship candidate, Chinyeaka Ohaa.
DAILY POST had earlier reported that the attack heightened tensions in the state, with reports indicating that the incident claimed a life.
Obi expressed concern over the development, stressing that political disagreements should not be allowed to degenerate into violence, intimidation or the loss of lives.
He warned that the consequences of anarchy would affect not only those responsible for instigating violence but also the wider society, including people who had no direct involvement in political disputes.
The NDC presidential candidate’s reaction comes amid growing concerns over alleged attacks on members of the party in Enugu State.
Barely a month before the airport incident, the NDC had accused suspected state-sponsored thugs of attacking its members during a grassroots meeting in Obuoffia Ward, Nkanu West Local Government Area of the state.
The latest incident has renewed concerns about the safety of political supporters and the need to prevent violence as political activities intensify.
Obi’s remarks also highlighted concerns about the reported threats against individuals organising his engagements, raising questions about the freedom of political actors to participate in public activities without intimidation.
He called for an end to political violence, warning that allowing lawlessness to persist could undermine public safety, democratic participation and peaceful coexistence.
The reported attack in Enugu has further drawn attention to the responsibility of political leaders and relevant authorities to ensure that disagreements are addressed through peaceful and lawful means.
