In a major political shift ahead of the 2027 general elections, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has declared his full commitment to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), affirming his readiness to support former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi or any candidate chosen by the party.

Appearing on Arise TV’s PrimeTime programme, the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement emphasized that party supremacy would dictate his role in the next election cycle, even if it means serving as a running mate to a Southern candidate.

Key Highlights of the Realignment:

• Zoning Agreement: The NDC has officially resolved to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term. Kwankwaso noted that this strategic move aims to resolve historical tensions regarding power rotation and national unity.

• Northern Support: Kwankwaso revealed that many Northern political leaders within the party have accepted this arrangement to "eliminate the confusion" that has trailed Nigerian politics since the transition of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

• Obi-Kwankwaso Synergy: Having already held high-level discussions on national security, Kwankwaso described the Obidient and Kwankwasiyya movements as disciplined and ideologically aligned forces capable of working together for a "new direction."

• A Youth-Led Mandate: Highlighting the influence of a younger generation, Kwankwaso remarked that his own daughter had encouraged him to partner with Obi as far back as 2023. He noted that the 2027 polls would be driven by Nigerian youth seeking quality, enthusiastic leadership.

Critique of Incumbent Governors

Kwankwaso did not hold back in his assessment of the current political landscape, criticizing state governors for what he termed a "heavy reliance" on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for their political survival.

"Things have changed," Kwankwaso stated, suggesting that Northern voters are moving beyond traditional "stomach infrastructure" politics—such as the distribution of food items—in favor of substantive governance and security.
