Peter Obi Outlines Vision for Northern Nigeria Ahead of 2027 Polls
LAGOS Nigeria: Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party (LP), has expressed strong confidence in his ability to garner significant support from Northern Nigeria in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections. During an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Monday, the former Anambra State Governor asserted that his developmental roadmap for the region remains unrivaled by any other political contender.
Transforming the North through Agriculture
Obi characterized Northern Nigeria as the nation’s "greatest asset," emphasizing a shift in economic focus from petroleum to large-scale agrarian development. He argued that strategic investment in the region's vast landmass could yield greater economic returns than the country's current reliance on oil.
"Nobody can do what I intend to do in the North. We will change the North," Obi stated. "Our greatest asset as a country is in the North. We can make more money from agriculture than we make from oil."
Strengthening Democratic Institutions
Beyond regional development, Obi addressed the current state of Nigeria’s democracy, stressing the critical role of a robust opposition in ensuring government transparency and accountability.
He called on the incumbent administration to foster an environment where dissenting voices can thrive, suggesting that a weakened opposition undermines the quality of governance.
Highlights from the interview included:
Economic Reorientation: A commitment to prioritizing Northern agriculture as the primary driver of national GDP.
Political Inclusivity: The necessity of protecting opposition parties to maintain checks and balances.
Institutional Integrity: A call for the government to actively support the mechanisms that make democracy functional and competitive.
Obi’s remarks come amid shifting political alliances and early preparations for the 2027 electoral cycle, as he continues to position himself as a transformative alternative in the Nigerian political landscape.
