PRP Invites Atiku, Obi, Kwankwaso to Form United Front Amid ADC Leadership Crisis

The People’s Redemption Party (PRP) has called on prominent figures within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso, to align with its platform in a bid to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.

The appeal follows the ongoing leadership crisis within the ADC, which has led to the derecognition of factions led by David Mark and Nafiu Bala Gombe by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In a statement issued on Wednesday, INEC Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, Mohammed Haruna, said the commission would refrain from engaging with either faction. He cited a March 12 Court of Appeal judgment and noted that INEC would not participate in any meetings, congresses, or conventions organized by the groups pending the resolution of a case before the Federal High Court.

Reacting to the development on Thursday, the Lagos State Chairman of the PRP, James Adeshina, described the ADC crisis as a significant threat to opposition unity in Nigeria.

“At a time when the nation urgently requires a strong and united opposition to safeguard democracy, internal crises such as this weaken the ability of political actors to present credible alternatives,” Adeshina said.

He warned that continued fragmentation within opposition parties could create conditions for unchecked political dominance and heighten concerns about Nigeria drifting toward a one-party state.

Adeshina noted that with both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the ADC facing internal challenges that may affect their electoral prospects, the PRP stands out as a stable and credible alternative.

He emphasized the need for political stakeholders to adopt a collaborative approach rather than operate as competitors, urging leaders to prioritize national interest over party divisions.

“I extend a sincere invitation to key stakeholders within the ADC and beyond—leaders such as Atiku Abubakar, Rauf Aregbesola, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso—to consider joining the PRP,” he said.

According to him, the ongoing instability within the ADC presents an opportunity for political actors to align with a more stable and ideologically consistent platform.

“The contrast is evident. While the ADC is grappling with internal instability, the PRP remains Nigeria’s oldest political party, with a legacy of discipline, unity, and ideological clarity,” Adeshina stated.

He added that the PRP has largely avoided the internal disputes that have affected many other political parties, positioning it as a viable platform for advancing a unified political agenda.

Adeshina further described the ADC crisis as a wake-up call for opposition leaders to consolidate their efforts in the interest of national development.

“This is not about abandoning ideals but about preserving them within a more viable and stable structure,” he said. “History will ultimately judge us not by the parties we defended, but by the nation we helped to build.”

Reaffirming confidence in the party’s future, Adeshina said the PRP has the capacity to win the 2027 presidential election as well as the Lagos State governorship if opposition forces unite under its banner.
