Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Ibrahim Gusau, has resigned from office, announcing his decision at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday.
Gusau’s resignation comes amid mounting concerns over the state of Nigerian football following a series of disappointing results involving the country’s senior national teams.
According to the Super Eagles news account on X, @SSE_NGA, Gusau was joined by members of the NFF Executive Committee who also announced their resignations.
The development follows the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup — the first time Nigeria’s women’s senior national team has missed the tournament in the country’s history.
The Falcons suffered a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in the World Cup play-off, ending their hopes of securing a place at the global tournament.
Their failure to qualify came after an earlier setback at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where Nigeria were eliminated by Cameroon at the quarter-final stage.
The Super Eagles have also endured disappointment, having failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Beyond the teams’ performances, the NFF has faced scrutiny over its management of a ₦17 billion Federal Government intervention fund released in 2024.
The federation has also come under pressure following a fact-finding committee report that alleged that some board members and officials influenced invitations to national teams for financial gain. The allegations have added to calls for greater accountability and transparency within the federation.
Gusau’s resignation comes just weeks before the NFF elective congress, scheduled to hold on September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
The latest development is expected to further shape the leadership contest and the future direction of Nigerian football ahead of the elective congress.
