During a FIFA World Cup reception at Trump Tower in New York, US President Donald Trump called on football's governing body to return the men’s World Cup to the United States in the future, proposing that the next US-hosted tournament exclude co-hosts Canada and Mexico.

Addressing FIFA President Gianni Infantino ahead of the tournament final between Spain and Argentina, Trump commended the current event but suggested a solo American hosting format for a future iteration. He also recommended that FIFA select an alternative host country for the subsequent tournament before bringing the event back to the United States, suggesting this approach could help defuse global tensions.

Additionally, Trump noted an alternative concept previously discussed with Infantino regarding a potential joint hosting bid between the United States and China, jokingly referencing the extensive travel logistics for the athletes.

The next available men’s tournament open for bidding is the 2038 World Cup. Following the current 2026 tournament—which marks the first time three nations have jointly staged the event—FIFA has already finalized the hosting rights for the next two cycles. The 2030 tournament will be primary hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, with centenary matches in Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, while Saudi Arabia is set to host in 2034. Under FIFA’s current continental rotation rules, nations from North America and Oceania will be eligible to submit bids for the 2038 tournament when the formal bidding process opens.
