MADRID — Atletico Madrid progressed to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals with a 3-2 aggregate victory over Barcelona, weathering a fierce second-leg comeback to secure their spot in the final four. Despite suffering a 2-1 defeat on the night at the Metropolitano, Atleti’s two-goal cushion from the opening leg proved decisive.

Early Pressure from the Visitors

Barcelona entered the second leg facing a 2-0 aggregate deficit but initiated a clinical start to ignite hopes of a turnaround.

  • 5th Minute: Lamine Yamal capitalised on a defensive lapse by former Blaugrana defender Clement Lenglet, sliding a composed finish past goalkeeper Juan Musso to halve the aggregate lead.

  • 24th Minute: The tie was leveled when Dani Olmo threaded a precise pass to Ferran Torres, who executed a powerful left-footed strike into the top corner.

Barcelona nearly took the lead in the tie shortly before the half-hour mark, but Juan Musso produced a vital save to deny an unmarked Fermin Lopez from close range.

Atleti Respond Amid VAR Drama

The momentum shifted in the 31st minute when Marcos Llorente exploited space on the right flank. His low cross found Ademola Lookman, who clinical finish restored Atletico's aggregate advantage and quieted the vocal home support.

The second half was marked by further tactical tension and officiating intervention:

  • Disallowed Goal: Ferran Torres appeared to have secured his second of the night with a cushioned volley, but the goal was overturned following a VAR review for offside.

  • Red Card: Barcelona’s comeback efforts were severely hampered when Eric Garcia was dismissed for a professional foul on Alexander Sorloth, leaving the visitors with ten men for the remainder of the match.

Looking Ahead

Atletico Madrid’s resilient defensive display ensures their first semi-final appearance since 2016. Diego Simeone’s side will now face either Arsenal or Sporting CP as they continue their pursuit of a maiden Champions League title.
