A devastating fire at a bar in Bangkok's Chatuchak district late Sunday night resulted in at least 27 fatalities and left more than 60 people injured, including eight who remain in critical condition.

The blaze reportedly originated near the stage at the Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao venue before rapidly spreading throughout the premises. The fast-moving flames knocked out power and filled the building with thick smoke, causing panic among the patrons attempting to escape through the main entrance. Firefighters arrived shortly after midnight and brought the fire under control within approximately 30 minutes.

Investigation and Preliminary Findings

An initial assessment by Bangkok’s disaster mitigation department indicates that the majority of the victims succumbed to smoke inhalation. Rescue workers discovered most of the deceased inside a bathroom, where they had sought shelter from the flames.

While forensic teams are still conducting a formal investigation, authorities suspect an electrical short circuit in an air conditioning unit may have triggered the disaster. Bangkok Governor Chatchart Sittipunt noted that flammable interior decorations on the ceiling likely accelerated the spread of the fire. Additionally, authorities are investigating reports that the building's emergency exits may have been obstructed, as several unconscious victims were discovered near the exit doors.

Government Response and Safety Concerns

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited the site early Monday morning to assess the situation. Officials have pledged a comprehensive investigation into the incident, which has renewed public scrutiny regarding the enforcement of safety regulations.

This tragedy echoes previous mass-casualty venue fires in Thailand, including a 2022 nightclub fire south of Bangkok that claimed 22 lives, and the 2009 Santika Club fire in the capital, which killed 66 people during a New Year's Eve celebration. Despite prior government commitments to upgrade and enforce building and electrical safety codes, critics argue that oversight remains inconsistent.

By Monday morning, emergency services had cordoned off the severely damaged building. The structure sustained extensive interior damage, leaving the walls, furniture, and ceiling entirely blackened. Dozens of injured victims continue to receive treatment at local hospitals as forensic investigators work to determine the official cause of the blaze.
