Israel's Defense Minister Israel Katz announced that a senior Hamas commander has been captured following a raid in Gaza City.

Katz did not identify the captured official or specify which forces carried out the arrest, following reports that Israeli special forces and an allied Palestinian militia entered western Gaza City. The operation triggered heavy bombardments and chaotic scenes, with local medics reporting that simultaneous Israeli airstrikes killed a woman and two children in Gaza City, along with a third child in central Gaza.

Hamas-run government media claimed the Israeli infiltration unit was exposed and suffered casualties during the operation. The Israeli military confirmed it struck targets in Gaza to protect its troops, stating that no Israeli personnel were injured.

The ongoing war stems from the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel, which left about 1,200 people dead and 251 taken hostage. According to UN-recognized figures from the Hamas-run health ministry, more than 73,460 people have been killed in Gaza since the conflict began.
