Mali’s Defense Minister, General Sadio Camara, has been killed following a series of sophisticated, coordinated attacks on military installations across the country, sources confirmed on Sunday.

The General’s death follows a targeted assault on his residence in the garrison town of Kati. The operation was part of a broader, simultaneous offensive launched Saturday by fighters from the al-Qaeda-linked Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and Tuareg rebels from the Liberation Front of Azawad.

A Significant Blow to the Military Government

General Camara was a pivotal figure in the transition government, having played a central role in the military coups of 2020 and 2021. Analysts regarded him as one of the most influential members of the ruling leadership and a potential successor to the presidency.

His assassination marks a critical security breach and a major setback for the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa), particularly given the location of the fatal strike. Kati, situated approximately 15km northwest of Bamako, is Mali’s primary military hub and was previously considered one of the most secure zones in the nation.

Widespread Instability

The assault on Kati was executed via a suicide car bomb, coinciding with gunmen targeting several other strategic locations, including:

  • Bamako: The nation's capital.

  • Gao and Kidal: Key northern strongholds.

  • Sévaré: A vital central hub.

Reports indicate that clashes remain ongoing in some regions. In the northern town of Kidal, residents have reported sustained heavy gunfire and explosions continuing more than 24 hours after the initial incursion.

Government Response and International Condemnation

Interim President Assimi Goïta was reportedly moved to a secure, undisclosed location during the onset of the violence. While officials confirm he is unharmed and remains in command, his administration faces intense scrutiny for failing to preempt the large-scale offensive.

The international community has reacted with swift condemnation. Statements of concern and denunciations of the violence were issued by:

  • The African Union

  • The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC)

  • The U.S. Bureau of African Affairs

As the Malian government attempts to restore order, the loss of General Camara leaves a significant power vacuum within the military hierarchy during one of the country's most volatile periods in recent years.
