A 47-year-old man has been charged with murder and two counts of sexual assault following the death of a five-year-old girl, whose disappearance sparked a massive search and subsequent civil unrest in Central Australia.

The defendant, identified as Jefferson Lewis, was charged on Saturday night. He is scheduled to appear in a Darwin court on Tuesday. The victim is being referred to by the pseudonym Kumanjayi Little Baby, in accordance with Warlpiri cultural protocols that prohibit the use of a deceased person’s name during the mourning period to avoid disturbing their spirit.

Discovery and Community Impact

The child was reported missing last Saturday after being put to bed at an Aboriginal town camp near Alice Springs. Her body was recovered on Thursday following a multi-day intensive search by Northern Territory (NT) Police and community members.

In a statement released via the police, the child's mother expressed the family's profound grief:

"It is going to be so hard to live the rest of our lives without you... Me and your brother will meet you one day."

NT Police Commissioner Martin Dole addressed the public on Sunday morning, extending condolences to the family and the wider community. "This remains a deeply distressing matter," Dole said, while urging the public to allow the judicial process to proceed without interference.

Civil Unrest and Police Response

The tragedy has triggered significant volatility in Alice Springs. On Thursday night, violent riots erupted outside the local hospital where Lewis was initially being treated for injuries sustained during his apprehension.

Key developments regarding the unrest include:

  • Relocation of Defendant: Due to the scale of the riots, police transferred Lewis approximately 1,500km north to Darwin for his safety and the security of the medical facility.

  • Property Damage: Rioters targeted police vehicles—setting at least one ablaze—and looted a nearby petrol station and supermarket. Damage is estimated to exceed A$180,000.

  • Law Enforcement Action: Police utilized tear gas to disperse crowds. Five individuals have been arrested in connection with the violence.

Commissioner Dole condemned the riots as "abhorrent," stating that the footage of looting did not represent the processing of grief but was "criminal behavior, plain and simple."

Calls for Restraint and Customary Law

The unrest was partly fueled by calls for "payback"—a form of traditional punishment under Aboriginal customary law intended to restore balance between families. However, senior elders have joined authorities in calling for calm.

Robin Granites, a senior Warlpiri elder and the victim's grandfather, emphasized the need for peace:

"What has happened this week is not our way. Our children are precious... This man has been caught, thanks to community action, and we must now let justice take its course while we take the time to mourn."

The legal proceedings against Lewis will continue this week as the Alice Springs community begins a period of cultural mourning.
