At least 1,924 people remain missing in Nepal following Wednesday’s devastating flash floods, according to the Nepalese disaster relief agency.

The missing include at least 517 foreign nationals, although the situation remains fluid and figures vary between authorities as rescue and recovery operations continue. 

The death toll in Nepal has risen to 579, the disaster relief agency said. In neighbouring Tibet, at least five people have reportedly died and 558 remain missing, according to figures reported by Chinese state media.

The BBC is relying on Chinese state media reports for information about the situation in Tibet, where access to independent reporting remains limited.

The floods have also left families desperately searching for loved ones. The brother of one missing British national has appealed to local officials for help, saying: “Please help us find her.”

Local officials told the BBC that a collapsed glacier triggered the massive flood wave. The surge swept through homes and roads, causing widespread destruction and severing a key Nepal-Tibet border crossing.

Rescue teams are continuing to assess the scale of the disaster as authorities work to locate missing people and reach communities cut off by the floods.
