WASHINGTON/TEHRAN:  U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated a possible breakthrough in Middle East diplomacy, suggesting that direct talks between the United States and Iran could resume in Pakistan within the next 48 hours. In a preview of an upcoming interview with Fox News, the President expressed optimism regarding regional stability, characterizing the ongoing conflict as being "very close to over.

The diplomatic overture is reportedly part of a broader strategy aimed at a comprehensive settlement. Vice President JD Vance confirmed that the administration is seeking a "grand bargain" with Tehran to resolve long-standing tensions.

Naval Blockade Cripples Iranian Trade

While the administration signals a desire for dialogue, military pressure on the Islamic Republic remains at a peak. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) Admiral Brad Cooper reported today that a U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports has "completely halted economic trade.

Maritime activity in the region remains highly restricted:

  • Enforcement: While a limited number of vessels successfully navigated the Strait of Hormuz yesterday, Admiral Cooper confirmed that six ships were intercepted and turned back.

  • Tracking Data: Satellite and tracking data corroborated these reports, showing at least one vessel performing a U-turn in the Gulf of Oman after encountering U.S. naval assets.

Regional Conflict and Diplomacy

The news of potential U.S.-Iran negotiations comes amid continued volatility elsewhere in the region.

  • Lebanon Front: Israel has maintained its aerial campaign against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. This follows a high-level meeting on Tuesday between Israeli officials and representatives of the Lebanese government held in the United States.

  • Tehran’s Response: Iranian officials have yet to issue a formal comment regarding the President's claim of imminent talks in Pakistan.

The dual-track approach—combining a rigorous maritime embargo with an invitation for high-level negotiations—marks a critical juncture for the administration’s foreign policy as it attempts to finalize what it describes as a definitive end to regional hostilities.
