Fighting between the United States and Iran has escalated following the expiration of a 60-day ceasefire, with both nations trading military strikes targeting vessels in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. The six-month conflict has significantly disrupted global energy shipments and raised economic pressures internationally.

The latest round of hostilities began when US Central Command reported that Iranian forces targeted a US aircraft carrier and a guided-missile destroyer. US warships successfully evaded the incoming attacks without sustaining damage or casualties. In response, the US military launched retaliatory strikes that disabled two Iran-linked oil tankers near Kharg Island and destroyed a third vessel in the Gulf of Oman. US officials stated that the targeted tankers formed part of a financial network supporting the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Iranian state media confirmed the strikes on the tankers, reporting that crew members were safely evacuated to shore via lifeboats. In retaliation, the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched attacks against six vessels in the region. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime corridor that historically handled approximately twenty percent of the world's petroleum supplies, has remained effectively closed to standard commercial traffic since hostilities commenced in February. While Tehran asserts control over the waterway, the US military has actively escorted commercial vessels through alternative southern shipping lanes.
