Mass demonstrations across France erupted into widespread violence on Saturday, resulting in at least 1,200 arrests and significant property destruction. An estimated 550,000 people participated in the nationwide protests, which were sparked by public frustration over inflation, the cost of living, and deteriorating conditions in secondary schools.

While daytime marches began peacefully, tensions escalated significantly as evening approached. In Paris and other major urban centers, including Lyon, Marseille, Rennes, Toulouse, and Limoges, clashes broke out between security forces and disruptive groups. Riot police deployed tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds, while firefighters faced hostile interference while attempting to control major blazes.

Significant infrastructure damage was reported nationwide. In Limoges, a severe fire at the town hall caused part of the structure to collapse, and in Lyon, the historic tourist office was severely damaged by fire. Vandalism, looting, and arson targeted numerous commercial establishments, including clothing stores, supermarkets, and electronics retailers in cities such as Paris and Lille.

Government officials reported that approximately 150 police officers sustained injuries during the unrest. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu condemned the destruction, stating that authorities would not allow political agendas to be forced through violence. The demonstrations have intensified political friction in the country as France approaches upcoming presidential elections, with various political leaders offering sharply contrasting responses to the civil disorder.
