Diplomatic tensions between Nigeria and South Africa have escalated following a controversy surrounding visa denials and subsequent concert cancellations. The friction involves high-profile artists from both nations and has drawn responses from government officials and diplomats.

The diplomatic row reignited after allegations that Nigerian singer Ayra Starr and her team were denied entry visas by South African immigration authorities in February 2024, leading to the cancellation of her scheduled performances in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Concert organisers, Steyn Entertainment, maintained that visas were denied despite exhausting all application avenues. The incident prompted several prominent Nigerian lawmakers, including former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole and Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, to urge the Federal Government to consider reciprocal measures regarding visa applications for South African artists.

In response, the South African Consul-General to Nigeria, Prof. Bobby Moroe, stated that immigration authorities had no record of any visa applications or rejections concerning the singer or her team. He urged individuals making the claims to provide official names and reference numbers to facilitate verification.

While the tour date was quietly removed from the singer's official website, neither Tyla nor her management issued a formal statement explaining the change. Consul-General Moroe noted that the South African mission had received no official communication from the event promoters regarding the cancellation, though he emphasized that official diplomatic relations between the two countries remain intact.

Addressing the wider implications, former Nigerian diplomat Rasheed Akinkuolie remarked that the suspension of cultural exchanges was an inevitable consequence of the strained relations, noting potential security risks for participants. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Federal Government has intensified calls for concrete action. Following recent high-level diplomatic engagements in Abuja and Pretoria, Nigerian officials have demanded the full implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding on the Early Warning Mechanism to prevent future incidents. Furthermore, Nigeria has renewed its demand for adequate compensation for citizens who have suffered losses during previous outbreaks of anti-migrant violence.
