Katsina Communities Displaced Following Bandit Ultimatum and Livestock Demands

KATSINA, NIGERIA — Residents across several communities in the Kankia Local Government Area of Katsina State have fled their homes following a formal ultimatum from suspected bandits demanding a massive delivery of livestock to avert coordinated attacks.

The threat, delivered via a written letter on April 6, ordered the affected villages to provide 700 cattle and 1,000 sheep by Friday, April 10. The demand has triggered a humanitarian exodus, with local sources reporting that at least 10 villages—including Sukuntuni, Unguwar Tsamiya, Magama, Walawa, and Tudun Wulli—are now largely deserted.

Escalation of Hostilities

Displaced residents, speaking on the condition of anonymity, indicate that the ultimatum is the culmination of months of sustained harassment, abductions, and economic "taxation" imposed by criminal elements. Reportedly, the current demand stems from a notorious bandit leader seeking to replenish livestock holdings following internal disputes with criminal associates.

The effectiveness of local diplomacy is also under scrutiny. "Past negotiations have only ever provided temporary relief," one resident noted, highlighting a growing lack of confidence in informal peace pacts with armed groups.

Government Response

The Katsina State Government has moved to de-escalate the situation, urging citizens to remain calm while security agencies investigate the authenticity of the threat.

Malam Maiwada Dan-Mallam, Director General of Media and Publicity to the Governor, suggested the letter might be a psychological warfare tactic:

"The letter has not been officially acknowledged by any authority. It could have been written to create fear among the people. The government is working tirelessly to protect lives and property across the state."

Current Security Status

Despite the administration's assurances, the atmosphere in Kankia remains tense. Reports indicate that armed bandits continue to transit the area on motorcycles, maintaining a visible presence that contradicts official calls for normalcy.

While some displaced persons have sought refuge in nearby Rimaye, others have fled further to Katsina town or across state lines into Kano, hesitant to return until a more permanent security presence is established.
