Traditional Ruler and Security Detail Assassinated in Ambush in Imo State

OWERRI: Nigeria, Tragedy struck the Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State on Friday night as gunmen assassinated the traditional ruler of Ochia, Paulinus Ekwueme, and several members of his security detail.

The Ambush at Ochia Boundary

According to local sources and police reports, the monarch was traveling in a convoy toward his village when he was ambushed at the boundary between the Assa and Ochia communities. The attack occurred shortly after Ekwueme’s return from an extended trip abroad.

The assailants reportedly opened fire on the convoy, killing the monarch and an unconfirmed number of security operatives. Following the initial attack, the perpetrators allegedly set the victims and their vehicles ablaze before fleeing the scene.

"It was a well-planned and well-executed attack," a source familiar with the matter stated. "Someone must have provided information regarding his return to the village on Friday."

Police Investigation and Security Response

The Imo State Police Command confirmed the incident over the weekend. Command spokesperson Henry Okoye stated that while the exact casualty count is still being verified, the gravity of the "dastardly act" has prompted an immediate large-scale response.

Deployment of Tactical Teams: State Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso, has ordered the immediate deployment of tactical units throughout the Ohaji/Egbema LGA to restore order and prevent further violence.

Manhunt Initiated: Law enforcement agencies have launched a manhunt to identify and apprehend those responsible for the assassination.

Community Tensions: Reports suggest the monarch had previously been involved in local disputes, leading to his temporary departure from the community prior to his trip abroad.

A Community in Mourning

The Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area remains in a state of shock and mourning as news of the brutal killings spread. The Police Command has assured the public that they will "fish out" the perpetrators regardless of where they are hiding, urging residents to remain calm while investigations continue.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
