Nigerian Army Colonel and Six Soldiers Killed in Borno Ambush

MONGUNO BORNO STATE:  The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of Colonel I.A. Muhammad and six soldiers following a sophisticated ambush by Boko Haram insurgents in the Monguno region of Borno State on Sunday night.

The fallen officer, who served as a Commanding Officer under Sector 3 of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), was killed while leading a reinforcement mission to support troops at a Forward Operating Base (FOB) under the 242 Battalion.

Details of the Engagement

According to official statements from the military and frontline reports, the incident began late on April 12, 2026, when insurgents launched a coordinated assault on a military formation. While the initial attack was successfully repelled by ground troops, Colonel Muhammad mobilized a reinforcement unit to personally assess the security situation and bolster the position.

Tragedy struck during the advance when the Colonel’s convoy was targeted by a remotely detonated Improvised Explosive Device (IED). Reports suggest the insurgents may have utilized advanced surveillance, including drones, to coordinate the strike.

"The Commanding Officer, while courageously proceeding to the troops' location to personally assess the situation, encountered an IED which severely affected his vehicle, leading to his death alongside six other gallant personnel," stated Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, Media Information Officer for Operation HADIN KAI.

A Pattern of Escalation

The death of Colonel Muhammad marks a somber period for the Nigerian military in the North-East. This incident is the latest in a series of high-profile casualties involving senior leadership over the past six weeks:

  • April 9, 2026: Brigadier General Oseni Braimah was killed during an attack in Benisheikh.

  • March 9, 2026: Lieutenant Colonel Umar Farouq fell during an assault in Kukawa LGA.

  • March 6, 2026: Lieutenant Colonel S.I. Iliyasu, CO of the 222 Battalion, was killed in action.

  • March 1, 2026: Commanding Officer Umar Ibrahim Mairiga was killed in the Bama LGA.

National Tribute

The Nigerian Army described Colonel Muhammad as a "symbol of courage and sacrifice," noting that he died "leading from the front." Security analysts have expressed concern over the insurgents' increasing reliance on sophisticated, remotely triggered explosives and drone technology, which pose a growing threat to mobile military operations in the Lake Chad Basin.

The remains of the fallen heroes have been evacuated as the military continues its pursuit of the perpetrators in the Monguno general area.
