LAGOS NIGERIA:  In a significant victory against transnational organized crime, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has officially repatriated a fleet of stolen luxury vehicles to Canadian authorities. The hand-over ceremony, held on Monday, May 4, 2026, at the Tin Can Island Port, marks the culmination of a months-long joint intelligence operation between Nigeria and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

High Value Interceptions

The recovered fleet comprises several high-end automobiles traced back to thefts in Canada. According to internal Customs documentation dated May 5, 2026, the intercepted vehicles include:

  • 2021 Rolls-Royce Dawn Convertible

  • 2019 Lamborghini Huracán

  • 2018 Lamborghini Aventador

  • 2023 Land Rover Range Rover

  • 2019 Mercedes-Benz G550

  • 2026 Toyota Tundra

  • 2019 Lexus RX350

The Deputy High Commissioner of Canada to Nigeria, Nasser Salihou, formally received the vehicles from the Customs Area Controller of the Tin Can Island Command, Comptroller Frank Onyeka.

Intelligence Led Enforcement

The operation was triggered by precise intelligence sharing regarding international shipping networks used by car theft syndicates. Comptroller Onyeka revealed that the criminal elements attempted to bypass security by concealing vehicles including a Toyota Tacoma within containers labeled as routine automobile shipments.

"What looked like a routine cargo movement quickly became an international criminal investigation," Onyeka stated. "Once intelligence reached us, we placed the consignment under enforcement watch and secured the vehicles pending confirmation from Canadian authorities."

Customs officials deliberately stalled the release of the cargo, resisting attempts by third parties to claim the vehicles. This ensured the assets remained in secure custody until they could be verified and handed directly to Canadian diplomatic representatives.

Strengthening Global Security Ties

National Public Relations Officer of the NCS, Abdullahi Maiwada, emphasized that this success is a testament to Nigeria’s evolving cargo profiling and maritime enforcement capabilities. The operation serves as a warning to international syndicates who exploit global shipping routes to move illicit goods.

Key highlights of the collaboration include:

Enhanced Intelligence Sharing: Direct communication channels between the NCS and the RCMP.

Diplomatic Integrity: Ensuring the direct handover to sovereign authorities to prevent domestic interference.

Maritime Vigilance: Utilizing advanced profiling to identify high risk containers at the Tin Can Island Port, one of Africa’s busiest maritime hubs.

Addressing the Global Theft Crisis

This breakthrough comes at a time of heightened global concern over the rise of sophisticated vehicle theft rings. Security experts have long identified African ports as frequent destinations for stolen exotic cars due to high demand. However, Nigerian authorities maintain that recent investments in intelligence systems and international partnerships are effectively closing these loopholes.

The successful repatriation underscores Nigeria’s commitment to restoring international confidence in its anti-smuggling frameworks and its role as a proactive partner in the global fight against organized cross-border crime.
