NAFDAC Dismantles Counterfeit Alcohol Syndicates in Lagos Seizes ₦350 Million in Adulterated Goods
LAGOS, NIGERIA: The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has successfully uncovered and dismantled two major illegal production outlets specializing in the counterfeiting and adulteration of alcoholic beverages within Lagos State.
Following a series of intelligence-led raids, enforcement operatives targeted facilities at Zamfara Plaza within the Trade Fair Complex and locations across Lagos Island. The operations resulted in the recovery of over 1,800 cartons of counterfeit alcoholic products, with an estimated market value of ₦350 million.
Discovery of Substandard Production Facilities
At the Trade Fair Complex, NAFDAC officers uncovered sophisticated yet makeshift production setups. The seized items included:
-
Large plastic mixing tanks and improvised filtration systems.
-
Extensive inventories of empty branded bottles and counterfeit corks.
-
Packaging materials designed to mimic popular high-end brands.
In a parallel operation on Lagos Island, authorities apprehended a suspect allegedly linked to the large-scale distribution of these hazardous beverages through a retail outlet. All illicit materials and finished products have been evacuated for further regulatory analysis and destruction.
Public Health Warning
NAFDAC has issued a stern warning regarding the extreme dangers associated with consuming adulterated alcohol. These illicit mixtures often contain lethal substances that can lead to:
-
Severe chemical poisoning
-
Permanent organ damage (specifically liver and kidney failure)
-
Sudden death
