Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 8 Division Garrison have successfully repelled an insurgent attack and rescued four kidnapped civilians during a high-stakes patrol in the Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The encounter occurred in the early hours of Sunday, April 21, as soldiers operating from the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Goronyo conducted a fighting patrol toward Gorau village. According to reports from security analyst Zagazola Makama, the troops encountered a group of approximately 20 armed terrorists at roughly 2:50 am.

Details of the Engagement

The ensuing confrontation saw Nigerian forces engage the attackers in a decisive gun battle. Overpowered by the superior firepower of the garrison, the terrorists were forced to retreat, abandoning four victims they had earlier seized during a raid on the community.

Initial findings revealed that prior to the military’s intervention, the insurgents had:

  • Invaded Gorau village, resulting in the deaths of three residents.

  • Inflicted gunshot wounds on three other individuals.

  • Abducted four civilians, who were later recovered by the troops.

Humanitarian and Security Response

Following the skirmish, the military immediately pivoted to medical and reunification efforts. The injured villagers were evacuated to a medical facility for urgent treatment, while the four rescued individuals have been safely reunited with their families.

"The injured victims were quickly evacuated for medical treatment, while the rescued abductees were safely reunited with their families," stated Makama, citing local security sources.

In the wake of the incident, the Nigerian Army has intensified clearance operations across the Goronyo axis. These measures aim to flush out remaining terrorist elements, prevent follow-up attacks, and restore a sense of security to the affected communities.
