PLATEAU STATE:  A violent attack in the Angwan Ishaku community of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area has resulted in the deaths of a young couple, sparking widespread condemnation and renewed calls for heightened security in the region.

The victims, identified as 30-year-old Mr. Iliya Gyang and his 25-year-old pregnant wife, Grace, were fatally shot on Wednesday evening. According to local reports, the assailants arrived on a motorcycle at approximately 5:30 p.m. and opened fire on the couple while they were working on a farm near their home.

Mr. Gyang, who sustained severe injuries during the assault, was rushed to a nearby hospital but was later pronounced dead. His wife died at the scene. The attack also left two other individuals injured. The assailants reportedly fled the area immediately following the incident, heading toward settlements in the Fass area along the Rakung-Sho road.

The Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong. Describing the attack as "barbaric, wicked, and inhumane," the association expressed deep concern that the violence occurred shortly after a town hall meeting held by Governor Caleb Mutfwang and a meeting of the State Security Council, both aimed at addressing ongoing security challenges in the region.

The BYM noted that the deceased couple leaves behind one-year-old twin boys. The association has called on the Plateau State Government to provide support for the children and urged security agencies to intensify efforts to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.

"The latest attack shows that perpetrators of violence are still bent on destabilizing peace efforts in the state despite ongoing interventions by the government and security agencies," the statement read. The group further urged military and law enforcement officials to conduct coordinated operations in known flashpoints to ensure the safety of residents.

The BYM extended its deepest condolences to the grieving families and called for community members to remain vigilant as authorities investigate the tragedy.
