At least 24 people have been confirmed dead following a series of coordinated attacks by armed bandits on the Jikamshi and Gwalgoro communities within the Musawa and Kankia Local Government Areas of Katsina State.

The surge in violence comes despite recent military successes in the region, including the neutralization of 45 terrorists during a high-stakes encounter in Danmusa LGA.

Tragedy at Jikamshi Market

The most recent assault occurred Monday evening in Jikamshi. Witnesses report that approximately 15 gunmen on motorcycles stormed the local market as traders were preparing to close for the day. The attackers opened fire indiscriminately, killing seven people and looting goods valued at millions of naira.

Among the deceased was Tukur Aliyu, a father of 20 who had recently returned from a family wedding in Lagos, and Rabi’u Ashiru, a 35-year-old shop owner whose wedding was scheduled for the coming months.

"Our lives are in danger now. He was our breadwinner... now he is gone, we don’t know how we will survive," lamented one of Aliyu's widows.

Following the killings, frustrated residents took to the streets in protest, blocking major roads and burning tires to denounce what they termed an "inadequate government response."

Reprisal Attacks in Gwalgoro

In a separate incident over the weekend, the village of Gwalgoro in Kankia LGA was targeted. While state officials officially confirmed 11 fatalities, local residents insist the death toll reached 17, stating they had already buried that number according to Islamic rites.

The Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu’azu, characterized the violence as a "cowardly reprisal." According to the Commissioner, security forces had foiled an initial raid led by a notorious bandit leader named Mohammadu on May 2. While the initial defense recovered rustled cattle and eight motorcycles, the bandits later regrouped to launch the deadly midday assault on the village.

Regional Insecurity Data (March – May 2026)

The security situation in Katsina has deteriorated sharply over the last two months. Reports indicate that over 40 people have been killed since March due to a collapse in local peace arrangements and retaliatory violence.

Calls for Federal Intervention

The Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN) in Musawa, alongside security analysts, has warned that the situation is exhausting local resources.

“The scale of the attack is enormous," the MACBAN chairman stated. "We believe in the efforts of the state government, but the situation is beyond its control. There must be moral, financial, and military support from the federal government.”

Security analyst Abubakar Ibrahim suggested that the timing of the resurgence may have political undertones as elections approach. Meanwhile, the Katsina State Police Command has assured the public that joint security operations are ongoing to track the perpetrators, declaring there will be "no hiding place for criminals" in the state.
