A midnight attack on Ngbrran-Zongo village in the Kwall District of Bassa Local Government Area has left at least 11 people dead and several others wounded. The assault, which occurred on Friday, April 8, 2026, reportedly targeted vulnerable members of the community, including women and children.

According to a statement released by the National Publicity Secretary of the Irigwe Youth Movement (IYM), Joseph Chudu Yonkpa, the assailants—identified by community leaders as suspected ethnic militias—invaded the village under the cover of darkness.

Casualties and Impact

The IYM confirmed that the fatalities include:

  • A seven-month-old pregnant woman.

  • A nursing mother.

  • A three-year-old child.

In addition to the deceased, numerous residents sustained varying degrees of injury. Reports indicate that those unable to flee the immediate vicinity, particularly the elderly, children, and other pregnant women, were among those harmed during the raid.

Response and Local Concerns

The IYM described the incident as an "unprovoked" act of violence against the Irigwe people. Community advocates have expressed growing alarm over the security situation in the Bassa LGA, calling for urgent intervention from state and federal security agencies to prevent further loss of life.

Local authorities have been urged to investigate the attack, identify the perpetrators, and bolster security presence in the Kwall District to restore peace to the traumatized community.

As of Saturday morning, security forces have yet to issue an official briefing regarding the pursuit of the suspects or the exact casualty figures beyond those reported by community representatives.
