The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that individuals involved in plotting against ad hoc election personnel, notably National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, have been apprehended through the Department of State Services (DSS) and are facing imminent prosecution.

During the South-East Zonal Interactive Meeting and Readiness Assessment in Enugu, INEC leadership outlined comprehensive strategies to secure the upcoming 2027 General Election.

Key Highlights and Strategic Initiatives

  • Enhanced Security Partnerships: The Commission has strengthened its collaboration with the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) and security forces across national and state tiers. By leveraging Election Risk Management (ERM) tools, INEC is building an intelligence-driven defense framework to safeguard polling environments.

  • Tackling Disinformation: INEC identified misinformation, deepfake media, unverified rumors, and public trust deficits as critical obstacles. The agency emphasized that proactive transparency, rapid official communication, and flawless operational execution are vital to neutralizing false narratives.

  • Strict Ethical Standards: Zero tolerance has been established for partisan bias, extortion, administrative negligence, or compromised ethics.

  • Mandatory Oath of Neutrality: Highlighting Section 26 of the Electoral Act 2026, the Commission reminded all electoral officers, presiding personnel, returning officers, and security details of their legal obligation to swear an oath of loyalty and neutrality, prioritizing strict adherence to the law above all else.

An upcoming Security Conference is scheduled to convene shortly to finalize remaining protocols for the electoral cycle.
