Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged the Federal Government to immediately release the complete text of Nigeria’s healthcare agreement with the United States. This call follows remarks by Ghanaian leader John Mahama, who revealed that Ghana turned down a similar U.S. health compact due to serious concerns over medical data privacy, pathogen regulations, funding terms, and drug inspection oversight.

In a statement released by the ADC Presidential Campaign Council, Atiku stressed that citizens deserve full transparency regarding what officials have committed to in their name, noting that Nigeria signed a five-year health Memorandum of Understanding with the U.S. in December 2025.

The U.S.-Nigeria pact involves approximately $2 billion in American grants alongside a $3 billion domestic financing commitment from Nigeria over five years, focusing on areas like disease surveillance, biosafety protocols, and digital health records. However, Atiku questioned the practicality of these financial promises, pointing to severe domestic funding gaps. He highlighted that maternal mortality rates in the country remain critically high and noted testimony from Health Minister Muhammad Ali Pate, who previously reported that only a fraction of allocated capital funds had been released for ministry projects.

Atiku emphasized that international partnerships are welcome if they save lives, but insisted that accountability and national sovereignty are non-negotiable. He is demanding that the administration make public all related annexes, data-sharing protocols, and financial undertakings to clarify whether local medical records or pathogen samples are protected, whether regulatory authorities retain full inspection powers, and how domestic spending will be managed.
