DHQ Places Troops on Nationwide Alert Ahead of Easter, Reaffirms U.S. Support

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has placed troops on nationwide alert in preparation for the Easter celebrations, assuring Nigerians of enhanced security measures across the country.

Speaking during the end-of-month briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Michael Onoja, said the Armed Forces had intensified vigilance to prevent any security breaches during the festive period.

He noted that similar precautionary measures had been implemented during previous celebrations, including Christmas and Eid-el-Fitr, and would continue as part of routine security strategy.

“Festive periods often come with heightened security concerns. The military has issued directives to ensure all personnel remain on alert, and this period will be no exception,” Onoja said.

He emphasised that security agencies would maintain full operational readiness, stressing that criminal elements often attempt to exploit such occasions.

“We are fully aware that threats may arise during celebrations, but we will not relax our guard. Nigerians can be assured of safety throughout the Easter period,” he added.

On international collaboration, Onoja reaffirmed that ongoing support from the United States is bolstering Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts. He explained that the partnership primarily focuses on intelligence sharing and capacity-building initiatives.

According to him, while the impact of such cooperation may not be immediately visible, its effects are expected to materialise in the coming weeks and months due to the strategic nature of military operations.

“The support we are receiving includes critical intelligence and training, provided on favourable terms. Some operational details remain confidential, but the collaboration is already strengthening our capabilities,” he said.

He further disclosed that intelligence assistance from the U.S. includes information on the locations and activities of hostile elements, enabling Nigerian forces to respond more effectively.

Onoja also recalled that on February 16, 2026, the DHQ confirmed the arrival of approximately 100 U.S. military personnel and equipment at Bauchi Airfield. He clarified that the personnel are not combat troops but are deployed strictly for technical assistance, training, and advisory roles.

Despite these efforts, concerns persist as insecurity continues in parts of the country, raising questions about the pace and impact of the ongoing collaboration.
