The FBI and Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) are joining forces to investigate the alleged mismanagement and diversion of funds intended for U.S.-backed health initiatives in Nigeria. Announced during a meeting in Lagos between EFCC officials and Marcus Maccain, the Assistant Law Enforcement Attaché for the FBI, the joint inquiry will scrutinize organizations and groups that received financial support through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), with a particular emphasis on projects combating HIV and tuberculosis.
This collaborative effort is designed to strengthen international cooperation against financial crimes and ensure accountability for foreign aid. Investigators will concentrate heavily on funds allocated prior to the conclusion of specific USAID-supported projects, examining how implementing bodies handled remaining balances and resources after programs ended. By partnering with the EFCC, the FBI aims to trace financial irregularities and determine whether funds were mismanaged or diverted from their intended public health goals.
