The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Rilwan Olutunji Disu, has directed immediate disciplinary action and criminal prosecution against Nigeria Police Force (NPF) officers involved in the fatal shooting of a civilian, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.

Speaking at a press briefing at the Force Headquarters on Wednesday, IGP Disu condemned the incident as "criminal, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable," asserting that such conduct fundamentally contradicts the core values of the NPF.

Investigation and Disciplinary Findings

According to the IGP, the primary suspect, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman, acted in "gross violation" of established operational procedures and Force Order 237, which regulates the use of firearms.

Following the incident, the IGP ordered the immediate transfer of the involved officers from the Delta State Command to Abuja for a formal inquiry. The Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) and the Orderly Room Tribunal subsequently conducted an investigation, which confirmed the following:

• Procedural Violations: The officers bypassed standard engagement protocols.

• Unlawful Conduct: The use of lethal force was deemed unjustified under the circumstances.

• Recommended Sanctions: Both bodies recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Nuhu Usman and his colleagues from the Force.

Legal Recourse and Accountability

The recommendations for dismissal have been forwarded to the Police Service Commission (PSC) for final ratification. Once formally dismissed, the former officers will be handed over to judicial authorities to face criminal charges for unlawful homicide.

"No uniform is a license to kill," IGP Disu stated. "We are demonstrating that every citizen, regardless of their rank or uniform, is accountable under the law. The era of impunity is over."

Commitment to Justice

The IGP extended his deepest condolences to the family of Mene Ogidi and the Effurun community, pledging that the NPF would ensure a transparent and decisive pursuit of justice.

While reaffirming the Force's commitment to internal reform and the rule of law, the IGP appealed for calm in Delta State, urging the public to refrain from "self-help" or retaliatory actions while the legal process unfolds.
