In a landmark development for Nigerian private and public politics, the Labour Party (LP) has elected Senator Nenadi Usman as its National Chairman. The election took place during the party’s national convention held on Tuesday in Umuahia, marking the first time a woman has been elected to lead a major political party in the country’s history.

A Path Defined by Resilience and Legal Mandate

Senator Usman’s transition to the substantive chairmanship follows her strategic leadership of the party’s National Caretaker Committee, a role she assumed on September 4, 2024. Appointed during a period of internal transition following the expiration of the previous National Working Committee's tenure, Usman successfully navigated the party through intense leadership disputes.

Her authority was solidified by the Nigerian judicial system through two significant rulings:

  • January 21, 2026: The Federal High Court affirmed her leadership, leading to formal recognition by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

  • April 21, 2026: The Court of Appeal delivered a unanimous judgment upholding the lower court’s decision, clearing the legal path for the national convention.

Leadership Vision and the 2027 Roadmap

In her acceptance speech, the former Minister of Finance and Senator expressed profound gratitude for the mandate, emphasizing a commitment to unity, reconciliation, and structural repositioning.

"I am committed to fostering peace within our ranks and ensuring that the Labour Party remains a formidable platform for all Nigerians," Usman stated. "We will build on the momentum of the 2023 elections to ensure even greater success in the 2027 general polls."

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, a key figure in the party’s recent growth, charged the newly elected leadership with providing "purposeful governance" and strengthening party structures across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The convention also saw the election of a diverse team to lead the party’s executive arm. The newly formed NWC includes:

Office Appointee
National Chairman Senator Nenadi Usman
National Secretary Iheanacho Obioma
Deputy National Chairman Mrs. Nike Oriola
National Publicity Secretary Ken Eluma Asogwa
National Organising Secretary Mrs. Oluchi Oparah
National Financial Secretary Comrade Anslem Eragbe
National Women Leader Hilda Dokubo

Analysis: A Strategic Consolidation

With Senator Usman at the helm, the Labour Party appears focused on institutional stability. Given her administrative background in the Federal Ministry of Finance and the Senate, analysts suggest her chairmanship is a move to professionalize the party’s operations as it prepares to challenge for national dominance in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
