The Nigeria Police Force has announced the arrest of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman following the fatal shooting of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, in the Effurun area of Delta State.
Incident Overview
The incident transpired on Sunday after officers from the Effurun Area Command were dispatched to the Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway. According to official reports, members of a local transport union had apprehended Ogidi after discovering a Beretta pistol and four rounds of live ammunition concealed within a parcel he intended to "waybill" (ship via commercial transport).
While police operatives were in the process of taking the suspect into custody, ASP Usman, the team lead, allegedly discharged his firearm in a manner described by the Force as a "violation of regulations." The discharge resulted in the immediate death of the suspect.
Disciplinary Action and Prosecution
In a swift response to the breach of protocol, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has ordered the following measures:
-
Immediate Transfer: ASP Usman and his entire team have been transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
-
Administrative Proceedings: The officers will appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee to undergo summary disciplinary measures.
-
Criminal Prosecution: Beyond internal discipline, the Force confirmed that legal prosecution will be pursued to ensure full accountability.

"The Inspector-General of Police extends his heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and assures them that justice will be served in accordance with the law. He further urges members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding as the disciplinary and legal processes take their course."
