Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir, leader of the Izala Scholars Council, has firmly defended his endorsement of a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket, stating he harbors no regrets despite facing backlash.

In a recent interview with BBC Hausa, Sheikh Jingir clarified that his stance was driven by religious responsibility rather than political partisanship or an active campaign for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He asserted that he would continue encouraging Muslim voters to back such political arrangements, dismissing ongoing public criticisms.

The controversy stems from remarks made by the cleric during a mass wedding event in Kano State, where he urged Muslims to utilize their demographic strength through the ballot box. While reflecting on past political grievances, Sheikh Jingir maintained that as a religious leader, advocating for political structures aligned with his faith is a fundamental right. He also contested assertions regarding Nigeria's religious demographics, maintaining that Muslims represent the larger population.

The remarks have elicited mixed reactions across the country. Critics have labeled the statements divisive, warning that they risk alienating non-Muslim supporters. Conversely, supporters have defended his freedom of expression, and some political analysts suggest the stance could consolidate core support among Muslim voters ahead of the upcoming electoral cycle.
